Please Note:
The 14th Annual Vancouver Westie Walk took place on Sunday, May 31st at Lighthouse Park in West Vancouver. This was another glorious day, no rain jackets, no extra sweaters. The bagpipes playing in the forest was quite a sight especially with 150 little wagging tails following closely behind. It was lovely! Following the Walk, the morning started off with a Parade of Rescues. All the BC rescues from Westie Rescue of Canada over the past 8 years participated and 3 others belonging to Donna Thomson, who has rescued her 3 Westies on-line. It’s always a time for tears but each story has a happy ending as we see these little guys, tails awagging, with their new forever Mums & Dads. This is what makes Rescue so rewarding! The Terrier Race just kept going on with so many Westies eager to catch that elusive squirrel. This year we had a few heats for the 1 year old and younger. These fast little ones were the successful ones at catching the squirrel before it got to the other end. They had so much fun, no one wanted the race to end! There are always one or two who look at the toy and know that they are Westies and far too smart to chase a stuffed toy, so just look around for Mum and wander back to the start line! In all I think we ran this race 32 times with 4 or 5 dogs in each race. They had a blast! Waiting in the wings were those with great appetites. The Wiener Dunk was avidly participated in as well. The timid ones who don’t want to put their face in the water are always fun to watch. Then there are those who eat their own wiener and are ready for the one that their neighbor didn’t eat. Great quality cookie prizes for the winners! Followed up by dessert, the Westies with the delicate tastes love the Ice Cream Eating contest. These dogs have to eat all the ice cream in order to win. Some inhale the ice cream and others take their time, and savour every lick, much to their owner’s frustration. The human participants enjoy catching up with people they met at past Walks and the dogs just enjoy the party. It was the most successful Walk we have ever had and the total proceeds from the Vancouver Westie Walk were donated to Westie Rescue of Canada.
